Every wool skein is hand-dyed individually by Loris from McAuslin Merino in Dunedin. Each skein is accompanied by a postcard of the relevant bird; some share a multi bird postcard. Loris is pictured here wearing a scarf she made from Kaka wool and holding a skein of Kakapo wool.
The colours are a celebration of the plumage of each bird. Skeins vary in intensity of shading as each skein is dyed separately/individually. Each skein is unique!
You can choose both your bird colour and the type of wool. Options for wool are:
4 ply blend of Alpaca 20% Polwarth 80%. Polwarth is a very close cousin to Merino, lovely wool, has not enjoyed the publicity of Merino.
4 ply blend of Merino 70% Mulberry Silk 30%. This is the creme de la creme of yarn!
8ply / Double Knit. South Island Merino 100%. Lovely high twist.
Wool is processed in Christchurch by Wild Earth Yarns. Hand wash.
Each 4ply skein weighs between 100 and 109 Gms, sufficient for a long scarf, or a pair of large socks. 8ply is between 102 and 105 Gms (though this can vary very slightly, for all the skeins).
Please provide a residential address for courier (cannot deliver to PO Boxes).
We're happy to let you know McAuslin won't charge additional postage for Rural Delivery orders.
Please note this wool will be shipped to you directly from McAuslin and will arrive separately from other items in your order.
