Please purchase these delightful prints direct from Judi: Art by JLM
Judi Lapsley Miller is a Wellington artist and advocate for wildlife conservation. Through her art she tells stories about the world’s endangered wildlife and wild spaces. Freed from the constraints of pure nature photography, Judi exposes her interpretation of the inner world of others – their thoughts and feelings, their hopes and desires – in a form tangible to the human viewer that she hopes engenders empathy with other living creatures.
Judi’s artistic approach starts with a photograph, but through digital photo-artistic techniques she creates fine artworks that are more reminiscent of paintings. Each print available is printed on heavy-weight fine-art paper and shipped flat in conservation-grade packaging. Flat-rate $8 shipping! Each print is approximately 21x21cm with a printed area of 18x18cm (except for the two Tūī, that are each A4 size with a printed area of 16x24cm).
For artworks featuring endangered wildlife, Judi donates 10% of her proceeds to conservation, including to Forest & Bird.
Print Descriptions:
SWEET DREAMS (RURU)
As golden hour ends and dusk settles, a wee ruru wakes up and prepares for the night. Filling the air with sweet calls to her lover, and sending sweet dreams to you.
RESOLUTE BEAUTY (TŪĪ)
This stunning tūī wears a cloak of iridescent aqua blue. Perched on a lichened branch, this tūī is ready for all comers, steadfast and resolute. This has a print area approximately 50% larger than the other prints for even more tūī goodness!
PEEKABOO (PĪWAKAWAKA)
A portrait of a tiny pīwakawaka nestled in houhere (lacebark). Their feathers reminded Judi of delicate stitchwork so she included a gorgeous embroidered background.
THE WEB OF LIFE (TOUTOUWAI)
The cutest wee toutouwai basks in the late afternoon sun in the deepest forest. Like many of Judi's artworks featuring toutouwai and kākā, this piece includes some fun steampunk twists!
GRACEFUL SPLENDOUR (TŪĪ)
Swinging gracefully from a lichened branch, a tūī eyes you up, poi hanging from its neck like a punctuation mark. This has a print area approximately 50% larger than the other prints for even more tūī goodness!
THE MUSE (KĀKĀ)
Created for the Forest & Bird Centennial, The Muse celebrates Judi’s joy at having kākā in her Wellington garden, after over a decade volunteering at Zealandia with kākā conservation. For larger sizes, please visit Judi’s online gallery at www.artbyjlm.com (she donates 10% of her proceeds for this print to Forest & Bird).
About the artist:
Judi Lapsley Miller (www.artbyjlm.com) is a New Zealand photo-artist with the natural world as her inspiration. She strives through her art to advocate for our endangered species by exploring themes like the tenacity of life in the face of environmental destruction, what it means to be endangered, and the post-human world. Many of her images are inspired from experiences with volunteering in wildlife conservation projects, where she has had the extraordinary privilege of working with endangered birds. Photography is just the first step in her creative process – she digitally blends and masks layers of photographs, graphics, scanned ephemera and textures, lighting and colour adjustments, and digital brushstrokes to form an image that is more painting than photograph. In her images she exposes her interpretation of the inner world of others – their thoughts and feelings, their hopes and desires – in a form tangible to the human viewer that engenders empathy with other living creatures.
Judi lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She has been a Forest & Bird member for over 20 years.
